This is the block held up to a lighted window. I think it looks like stained glass in a church window. It almost makes me want to not put anything behind it.
And this is it after border strips were sewn on to stabilize it. The border is much wider than it will be when finished, but that was the size of the strips in the scrap bucket so they were sewed on that size. Later they'll be trimmed down. Because this is almost completely improvisational, I'm not sure how it will play out yet. To fix the ribbon issue, we embroidered with bright yellow floss over the ribbons and also we're embroidering around the cener star.
